Oratorical Contest

Eligibility


The American Legion State Oratorical Contest is open to any student within the State of Indiana who is enrolled in classes equivalent to the regular 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades.

All students must be under 20 years of age. All students must be enrolled in high school during any and all levels of participate in this contest.

All contestants must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States.

Levels of Competition


There are 4 levels of competition:

  1. Local high school
  2. District
  3. Zone
  4. State Finals

Awards


Districts vary in their recognition of district winners.

Zone winners will receive an $800 scholarship. District winners will receive a $200 scholarship dependent upon participation at the zone contest.

State level:

1st Place -- $3,400

3 Finalists -- $1,000

Each State Winner will also receive a plaque. The 1st Place Finalist will represent the State of Indiana in National Competition and could obtain scholarship monies as high as $18,000.

Applications for the 2013-2014 program will be available in September.

News for Oratorical Contest

Jana Minich, home schooled student from Lafayette and sponsored by Post 38, was crowned the 2013 Department of Indiana winner. She will compete in the National Oratorical Contest April 20-21 at the Wyndham West Hotel in Indianapolis. She is pictured below with Department Commander Dick Jewell.
